Interdisciplinary learning is one way in which we can help young mathematicians make meaning of what they learn. Rich opportunities to apply math in other content areas, helps students to see it as a meaningful practice with usefulness, and less abstract. In this entry, I share how I use math in science. While this is a connection that seems more intuitive, elementary students still need support with explicitly recognizing the relationships between the disciplines. Purposeful instruction and activities help to facilitate those connections.
